Tourism's Role in Sustainable Community Development

The Ecotourism and Sustainable Tourism Conference (ESTC) is a unique annual conference focused on the advancement of sustainability goals for the tourism industry. Promoting policies and practices benefiting businesses and communities, the ESTC helps to reinforce the role of tourism in building a more sustainable future. The ESTC13 (September 24-27, 2013, Nairobi, Kenya) is co-hosted by TIES, Kenya Tourism Board and the African Wildlife Foundation, and in cooperation with the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and IUCN Tourism and Protected Areas Specialist Group.

Costas Christ

Mr. Costas Christ | Editor at Large, National Geographic Traveler

Costas Christ is an award-winning editor and columnist for National Geographic Traveler. One of the world's top sustainable tourism experts, Costa has served as the Chairman for the World Travel and Tourism Council's Tourism for Tomorrow Awards since 2004. He has also been recognized together with Dr. Jane Goodall, Sir Richard Branson, and Dr. Jeffrey Sachs as one of 50 Global Visionaries working to save the planet. He is a Contributing Writer for Virtuoso Life Magazine, and serves as Director of Sustainability for Virtuoso Ltd., one of the world's largest business to business travel trade networks.

Dr. Munir Virani

Dr. Munir Virani | Africa Programs Director, The Peregrine Fund

Dr. Munir Virani has been researching on birds of prey for the last two decades. Munir is the Program Director for Africa and South Asia for The Peregrine Fund and a Research Associate at the National Museums of Kenya. He has published over a 100 popular and scientific articles and was awarded the Aga Khan Award for Excellence in 2002 for his work on vultures in South Asia. He also won the Twende Africa Photographer of the Year award in 2007. He sits on the Board of Directors of the Raptor Research Foundation. He has spoken on TED.com about his love for vultures.

New Tour Operator Training Seminar Announced

Starting in 2014, the ESTC will be held annually in the spring. The ESTC14, in April 2014, will be hosted by Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, widely considered Brazil's Capital of Ecotourism. We offer 2-year sponsor and exhibitor packages for those interested in being part of both ESTC13 in Kenya and ESTC14 in Brazil. Please contact estc@ecotourism.org for more information.

 

 

The two-day training seminar "Sustainability For Tour Operators" is hosted in partnership with CBI (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands) and Travelife, and is available exclusively to the ESTC13 delegates.
