About the Trip

In this ecotravel package, you will experience a variety of natural settings from the North to the South of Wisconsin. You will be traveling in a hybrid rental car from Enterprise Rent-A-Car (depending on availability). You will find great accommodations, food, and interesting activities. Your trip will be anchored at each end by stays at two of the state’s acclaimed environmental Inns – The Arbor House – An Environmental Inn in Madison and the Pinehurst Inn in Bayfield.

Once you have picked up your hybrid rental car from Enterprise, you can venture north to Bayfield; following Highway 90/94 to Eau Claire and then north on 53. Stop at the Chippewa Moraine Ice Age State Recreation Area, part of the Ice Age National Scientific Reserve, for a picnic and a break at New Auburn. The Area offers unspoiled beauty with kettle lakes and many glacial features. The Interpretive Center provides information on the geologic history.

Continue north into Wisconsin’s northern pine forests and eventually to the shores of Lake Superior. When you arrive in Bayfield, you will find a warm welcome at the Pinehurst Inn. You will be staying in the Garden House, a perfect jumping off point for adventure or quiet exploration.

Dreamcatcher Sailing offers you a chance to explore and experience this Great Lake in a peaceful and unique way. Sail the Apostle Islands of Lake Superior on a 2 ½ hour hands-on trip for two people with Dreamcatcher Sailing. Take the wheel, help handle the sails or just relax, while viewing the weather-carved sandstone cliffs, clear waters, wild beaches, and lighthouses of the Gaylord Nelson Wilderness Area.

And when you are done, your hosts at Pinehurst Inn will welcome you back. After two nights in this beautiful location, head south towards Madison. Upon reaching Madison, check in at the Arbor House. From this inviting inn, you can walk or ride a bike to the University of Wisconsin Arboretum and enjoy nature’s seasonal splendor and you can take a tour down Monroe St. to sample the flavor of the day at Michael’s Frozen Custard.

For your final day trip, head north from Madison on Highway 12, passing Sauk Prairie and the Wisconsin River, to Baraboo. Baraboo is the location of your personal behind the scenes tour of the world renowned International Crane Foundation. The International Crane Foundation works to ensure the stabilization and continuation of this ancient and amazing bird species and to conserve the habitats that sustain cranes and numerous other species of wildlife.

Tour

About the Trip

sailing

ICF offers TIES supporters a unique, behind-the-scenes look at its headquarters located in Baraboo, Wisconsin. This memorable experience includes a guided “Cranes of the World” tour featuring the 15 crane species, tour of the Ron Sauey Memorial Library for Bird Conservation, and the opportunity to hike on 225-acres featuring restored tall grass prairie, oak savanna, and wetlands. ICF began in 1973 as a dream shared by two enthusiastic young men, Ron Sauey and George Archibald, who met as graduate students in ornithology at Cornell University. The dream was to save the world’s cranes—that idea has been the driving force behind ICF ever since. At the beginning, and for many years after, ICF was pledged to a mix of five essential activities: research, education, ecosystem protection, captive breeding, and reintroduction.Cranes are among the most spectacular, elusive, and beautiful birds on earth, with a heritage that goes back to prehistoric times. Watch the wheeling forms against a sunset, hear the pulsing rhythm of their calls, and you know they are unique. Their voices are clamorous trumpets from the past, eerie sounds with their long legs and necks outstretched in aerodynamic grace. In the words of ecologist Aldo Leopold, cranes are “nobility in the midst of mediocrity,” they are creatures “beyond the reach of words.”

Includes: Behind-the-Scenes Tour of the International Crane Foundation for two any time between April 15-October 31, light snacks
